TOur reading series is the Pearson Reading Street Common Core Edition. Each of six units begins with a "Big Question" about life and nature to be explored through reading, writing, and discussion.
The
class will work together to learn and practice reading strategies using a story from the text book. Students will also participate in
a reading strategy group designed to support them at their individual reading level. Students will have a small collection of self-selected books to read independently, with me or with a friend every day,
**The common core standards require a higher level of text complexity at every grade level than was true under the old, NYS standards. They also require greater emphasis on non-fiction reading and research.
Students will write every day on assigned topics in a variety of formats and for themselves. We will explore spelling, editing, grammar, organization, drafting and publishing throughout the year.
